NEW COTA PRESIDENT HIGHLIGHT OF RECORD BC TOURISM CONFERENCE
Okanagan tourism operator Michael Campbell, managing partner of the Best Western Inn at Penticton, has been elected President of the Council of Tourism Associations of BC (COTA).  The former COTA Vice-President was elected by the association’s board February 25th just in time for the start of what was to be a record breaking BC Tourism Industry Conference hosted this year in Victoria.  The conference attracted 525 delegates.  “Improving B.C.’s transportation network, developing insurance and financing solutions, supporting plans to strengthen human resources and guaranteeing land certainty are going to be major areas of focus for COTA in 2004,” said Campbell.  Flipping through the pages of COTA’s annual report released last month, the new President singled out efforts that have made the provincial tourism association a veteran voice on air service issues and a major player in the creation of go2, the new tourism association rolling out the B.C. industry’s human resource strategy.

NUMBER OF OVERNIGHT VISITORS TO BC DROPS 3.2 PER CENT
Latest estimates peg the drop in overnight tourists to B.C. last year at 3.2 per cent compared to 2002.  The preliminary numbers for tourism’s performance in 2003 were released earlier this month by Tourism BC and show significant drops in traffic from most of the more than 20 countries tracked.  Some markets like Italy, South East Asia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan suffered over 20 per cent declines.  Australia, Germany, UK, Netherlands, and Mexico were the only strongholds left to BC tourism operators last year.
