Tourism Sustainability
As B.C.'s tourism industry grows, it requires direction and management. The Provincial Tourism Strategy will provide this direction for all aspects of the tourism industry. COTA will continue to work with the provincial government and Tourism BC in the development of this planning process as a critical tool to guide tourism growth.
Goal : To significantly increase funding to Tourism British ColumbiaActions :
The Council of Tourism Associations is delighted with Gordon Campbell's announcement on September 24, 2004 of an increase to Tourism BC's budget by $25 million. The Council of Tourism Associations recognizes the ongoing need for Tourism BC funding. Since its inception, Tourism BC has been focused on marketing B.C.'s tourism product. In cooperation with industry, the provincial marketer works to promote the development and long-term success of BC tourism. It is a challenging task. B.C. tourism operates in a world market where many countries compete for the attention of the traveler. In an increasingly competitive environment, COTA promotes the investment of adequate resources from taxes and other government-enabled revenue to Tourism BC to support its marketing efforts. Tourism BC is a crown corporation of government, governed by a board of industry leaders. As such, it assumes the responsibility of marketing the BC tourism product, working in partnership with the industry. In addition, it is responsible for industry development, and with its governing structure, is well positioned to do so. A distinct division of roles between Tourism BC and the Tourism Secretariat is essential to the smooth running of the two into the future. This can be found in distinguishing the Tourism Secretariat's role in policy, planning and coordination, and Tourism BC's role in marketing and industry development. The tourism industry is excited with the opportunity to host the Vancouver/Whistler 2010 Olympic Winter Games. It is estimated that economic activity generated during and throughout the years preceding and after the games ranges from 81,000 to 145,000 person years of employment and ranges between creating $969 million to $1.527 billion in tax revenues. COTA promotes the early investment in infrastructure, human resources, marketing and product development to ensure that BC is ready for the world focus that will be on BC as a result of the event, and for the years that follow. |
